Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine mindfulness in yoga by examining the concept of smṛti in the Yogasūtra, and to explore the applicability of mindfulness yoga in contemporary yoga. In the Yogasutra, smriti is presented both as an action of the mind (1.6, 1.11) and as a method (1.20). There seems to be little disagreement with interpreting smriti as “memory” in the mind-action (1.6, 1.11). On the other hand, there are three main views of smriti in Yogasūtra 1.20: memory, dhyāna, and sati. This paper will show that these interpretations of smriti in Yogasūtra 1.20 are not all unrelated to sati, leaving room for smriti in 1.20 to be interpreted as “mindfulness,” like sati in Buddhist practice. In the modern stream of hatha yoga, where it is common for asana to be understood as a physical practice, it is noteworthy in relation to the topic of this paper that B.K.S. Iyengar, the greatest teacher of hatha yoga, describes asana as a process of meditation in his commentary on the Yogasūtra. In particular, in 3.1, he explains that “by dhāraṇā, external practice is transformed into inner reflection.” This characterization of dhāraṇā resonates with the description of anapanasati in the Goenka Vipassana, where it is explained that it enables us to develop two important qualities of concentration: “maintaining concentration by staying on one object” and “eliminating distractions.” This shows that dhāraṇā is of a similar nature to sati in asana. Based on the above discussion, it seems that mindfulness yoga is applicable in modern asana-centered yoga.
