초록

본 논문은 민주화로 귀결되는 1980년대 한국의 정치변동 과정을 정치커뮤니케이션의 관점에서 분석하고자 한다. 이러한 문제의식은 근본적으로 1980년대 한국의 정치변동을 이해하는 데 주요한 두 이론인 근대화 이론과 민주화 이행론에 대한 비판적 인식에 기초한다. 근대화 이론은 정치영역의 변화를 사회경제영역의 변화에 종속된 것으로 이해하고 있기 때문에 정치변동을 구체적으로 분석하기가 어렵다. 그리고 민주화 이행론은 정치변동을 이끄는 행위자들의 관계를 고찰함으로써 근대화 이론의 한계를 일정 정도 극복하고 있지만 그럼에도 불구하고 정치변동의 과정을 엘리트들의 관계로 국한하는 문제를 지니고 있다. 정치변동의 과정은 엘리트들만이 아니라 그들과 대중들의 관계를 포함하고 있다. 엘리트와 대중은 지지와 동원의 관계로 묶이는데 그것은 결국 정치커뮤니케이션 공간장악을 통해 특정한 정치적 메시지를 전달하는 과정이다. 또한 그 과정에는 엘리트와 대중을 매개하는 미디어가 깊이 개입한다.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to analyze 1980's political transformation to democracy in South Korea in terms of political communication. This research is fundamentally oriented to the critics of modernization theory and democratic transition theory, two main theories used to understand the South Korean democratization. The former can be criticized that, understanding the political transformation as by-product of that of socio-economy, it is not easy for it to analyze the political transformation in itself. And then, the latter may be criticized to reduce the political transformation to the elitist relations, even though it solves the theoretical limit of modernization theory, focusing on the political actors' relations. The process of political transformation includes not only the elitist relations, but also that of elite-mass. They are related to the process of support and mobilization, which is process of transmission of political messages by hold of communication space. And in this process is deeply engaged the mass-media, acting as an intermediary between elite and mass.
