Abstract
This article examines the recurring patterns of money exchange in James Joyce's Ulysses to argue that the author critically represents the operations of oppressive ideologies that structure reality and history. The novel meticulously records Leopold Bloom's income and expenses, which can be considered his personal financial ledger, and this has often been interpreted as reflecting his Jewish ethnicity, which was commonly associated with usury. However, understanding money exchange solely as a device to imply Bloom's ethnicity fails to fully consider its textual significance. This study explores the possibility of ideological resistance through an analysis of the ambivalent attitudes of Bloom and Stephen Dedalus towards money and money exchange. Through this analysis, this paper aims to assess the author’s perspective towards political ideologies such as anti-Semitism, imperialism, and nationalism that structured and oppressed the reality of early 20th-century Ireland.
