Abstract
Drawing on the multiple narration in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this essay examines how the three narrators engage in a truth game over the authenticity of their narratives. These narrators, Frankenstein, the Creature, and Robert Walton, each tell the story from their own perspectives, often conveying conflicting claims to truth. The essay shows how Frankenstein and the creature (and even Walton) self-centeredly reconstruct their experience to elicit sympathy from and exert influence on their listeners. Ultimately, the essay argues that while all speakers show eloquence and compelling evidence to assert the integrity and truthfulness of their stories, in the end, they all rely on others to secure their narrative authenticity, and in that sense, no one can claim absolute authority. These conflicting aspects of multiple narratives emphasize the listener/reader’s role in questioning the self-serving motives of the narrators and fashioning the story as a whole.
