Abstract

During my comprehensive investigation into the current status of over 22,000 ancient books in the Central Library of Wonkwang University from 2019 to 2020, I separately examined Chinese publications, identifying twenty-three woodblock prints from the Ming Dynasty and twenty produced during the Shunzhi~Kangxi[順治~康熙] period(1644~1722). I introduced the main cataloging matters through two preliminary studies. This article presents the results of the third contact, detailing the layouts, authors, publishers, printing units, and collectors of seventeen types of books engraved or printed during the Yongzheng~Qianlong[雍正~乾隆] period(1723~1795). The collection of Yongzheng~Qianlong era books in our library includes official woodblock editions from the Beijing Neifu[內府] government, personal private woodblock editions, and specially crafted workshop woodblock editions from bookstores, with a wide range of sources. This includes books engraved after fine handwriting or portable pocket books, offering a glimpse into the various forms of books published during this period. Additionally, there are numerous examples of strictly adhering to the name taboos of Emperor Yongzheng[雍正] and Emperor Kangxi[康熙]. By comparing them with foreign collections, we can confirm that they contain numerous exquisite copies, which can serve as important physical evidence for future comparisons and appraisals of these ancient texts. In addition, we have corrected misstatements regarding catalog items raised by the library so far, interpreting hard-to-identify characters in the seals to provide further information about the names, aliases, room names, and places of origin of the old collectors.
