Abstract

The writer examined the social and practical aspects that appeared as projected in Kwon Hwan's three plays created during the time of the country's loss. First, the background of Kwon Hwan's play creation and the tendency of his work were examined in connection with his literary moves. His plays, created in the mid-1920s, do not reveal a clear class consciousness, but reveal the reality of colonial Joseon intellectuals and contain the purpose of edification for reform. The class consciousness, which has become clear since 1929, has been contained in plays, but no text has been found in his plays during this period. Kwon Hwan's 1940s play was directed at the real problems facing the rural communities of colonial Joseon and the people who were persecuted and violated. Next, we paid attention to the dramatic world of plays that have social practice through the dramatic characteristics shown in Kwon Hwan's play. First, Kwon Hwan's play 「Gwang(狂)! tends to simplify the direction of the story through compression of the scene and auditory tension. This is to emphasize the dramatic events 'intensity' and 'revenge'. Second, 「Printed Love Letter」 is to criticize and edify the ideas of colonial youth through confrontational lines and sudden endings. Third, 「Father」 depicts the reality of colonial rural areas to the extreme by concealing the confrontational conflict of Japanese exploitation and creating dramatic tension. In the future, I hope that research on the literary worldview, including Kwon Hwan's plays, will continue.
