박물관은 전시를 통해 전시물이 지니고 있는 역사적, 문화적, 심미적 가치를 전달하여 관람객이 관람을 통해 의미를 만들어가는 과정에서 교육적 효과를 창출하는 공간이다. 초기 수집 중심 박물관에서의 전시는 전시물 그자체로서 존재하고 의미와 가치를 지니며 이를 보여주는 것만으로도 그 의미를 전달한다고 여겨졌지만 20세기 후반에 들어 박물관의 교육적 역할이 부각되면서 박물관은 관람객의 참여를 유도하는 상호적인 관계를 도모하기 시작하였다. 진정성이 중요시 여겨졌던 전시물은 그래픽, 영상, 모형 등 다양한 형태로 제작되어 관람객의 참여를 이끌어냈고 관람객이 전시물을 만지고 체험하는 직접적인 개념의 체험은 전시물을 통해 관람객의 감성을 자극하는 간접적인 체험으로까지 그 개념이 확장되었다. 관람객의 직·간접적인 체험이 박물관의 교육적 효과에 중요한 역할로 작용하면서 전시물과 관람객 간의 상호적인 소통의 역할이 강조되었고 박물관은 전시물을 통한 정보전달의 의미를 넘어 전시물이 내재하는 개념, 이야기를 전달하고자 다양한 전시기법을 도입하기 시작하였다. 그 중 본 연구에서는 관람객의 감각과 회고적 감성을 자극하기 위해 박물관에서 적용하고 있는 재현전시 중 특정한 시대의 장소 및 사건을 재현하는 전시를 중심으로 재현전시를 통해 형성되는 관람객의 의미형성(meaning-making)의 교육적 의미를 고찰한다.
Abstract
Museum is an institution that creates educational effects by delivering historical, cultural, and aesthetical significance of objects to visitors through a form of exhibition. For the previous museums in past where ‘collecting’ was considered the most significant, museums’ educational role was carried out by ‘showing’ as many objects as possible from the belief that the exhibited object itself speaks its own meaning and value. However, as such object-centered museums shift to experience-centered museum in late 20th century, notion of museums’ educational role expanded from ‘showing’ to ‘experience’. The museums now strive to allow visitors to create their own unique experiences through exhibition, allowing their own ‘meaning-making’ by stimulating visitors’ senses. In this paper, representational exhibitions that represents specific place and event during certain period are examined to investigate notion of ‘representation’ in museum environment and educational meaning of representational exhibition followed by case studies that adopted such method to augment visitors’ experiences and educational effects.
