Abstract
This study examines Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucian theory of li-qi (principle and material force) alongside the 1960s Italian art movement Arte Povera to explore the philosophical significance of materiality and processuality in arts and culture education. The research methodology is grounded in literature review and comparative cultural analysis, focusing on the Neo-Confucian concepts of the inseparable yet distinct relationship between li and qi (bulli buljap, 不離不雜), the investigation of things and extension of knowledge (gewu zhizhi, 格物致知), and learning in daily life (riyong zhixue, 日用之學) to examine the relationships between humans and the world, objects and meaning. These concepts are compared with Arte Povera's emphasis on the autonomy and temporality of everyday materials such as earth, wood, and cloth, as well as its process-centered aesthetics that embraces change and contingency. The analysis reveals that both traditions share the principles of immanence, processuality, and everydayness, which closely correspond with the core principles of arts and culture education that understands learning not as a product but as a process of inquiry, experimentation, and reflection. Particularly in the context of the AI era, Neo-Confucianism enables learners to perceive AI not merely as a technical tool but as a new learning environment and medium for inquiry, while Arte Povera suggests that the contingency and indeterminacy arising from collaboration with AI can be transformed into creative learning resources. Through this analysis, this study proposes a process-centered paradigm through which arts and culture education can expand creativity, self-directed learning, and interculturality, based on the philosophical dialogue between these two traditions. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that such philosophical discourse can serve as a foundation for exploring practical directions in various areas of arts and culture education in the AI era, including instructional design, assessment, and ethics education.
