Abstract
This study explores the philosophy of unity between nature and humanity in Liu Xizai’s 『Yi-Gai』(Qing Dynasty) and connects East Asian traditional aesthetics to contemporary humanities and arts education. Integrating Liu’s natural unity with the practical educational philosophies of John Dewey and David Orr, it investigates the potential for applying these ideas in modern education. By closely analyzing 『Yi-Gai』, the study identifies Liu’s core artistic and natural concepts and links them to Dewey’s experience-based learning and Orr’s ecological education. Based on this synthesis, practical educational programs—such as nature sketching, poetry creation, art discussions, and essay writing—are designed to help students gain artistic inspiration from nature, engage in self-reflection, and develop communal and ecological sensibilities. Liu’s philosophy offers an East Asian philosophical foundation for integrating humans, nature, art, and morality in education. It also promotes expanding artistic attitudes in everyday life and deepening learners’reflection on their relationship with nature, providing meaningful direction for humanities and arts education in response to contemporary ecological challenges.
