Abstract
This study means to discuss the Yi Sang’s modernism by an angle of cruelty’s aesthetics as rupture, explosion, cutting and breaking. A modernity starts what is called from rupture with tradition. The modernity in Korean literature is due to the reception of Occidental literature. Especially, Korean modern literature is based on Baudelaire and French modern writers as symbolists, having translated since 1920’s. So, Korean early modern writers would have been affected by them, for forming the modernity. Therefore, this study proposes contrasting Yi Sang, who one best understands the modernity came from Occident, with Baudelaire and some post- Baudelairiean French writers as Michaux and Artaud. The modernity captured by Yi Sang includes depature desire and is represented by a complex asprects of rupture-explosion : ruptures between author and characters in his work, between author and readers, between author and traditional society. All theses aspects that approach Yi Sang’s modernity to Occidental modernity can be interpreted in the cruelty’s aesthetics category. In the center of these aesthetics, it’s placed the emergence of the modern individual and mass production as a visual modern feature.
