Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the discourse function of the Korean conjunc tion ‘-nundey’. In Korean, ‘-nundey’ is among the most frequently used conjunction in making complex sentences. Previous studies of ‘-nundey’ have focused on determining the contextual meanings between the antecedent and subsequent clauses connected by ‘-nundey’, but there has not been sufficient examination of the essential meaning of ‘-nundey’. It is also notable that the lack of the explanation of the usage of ‘-nundey’ has resulted in a high rate of erroneous usage of ‘-nundey’ among students learning Korean as a foreign language. This paper proposed that ‘-nundey’ is used for the discourse effect in the way the subsequent information can be recognized efficiently. Moreover, this paper seeks to explain the principles by which the discourse effect appears in the context information. The first is the principle of black-white frame in which the ‘-nundey’ clause explains the contrasting information that emphasizes the subsequent information. The second is the principle of whole-part frame in which the ‘-nundey’ clause shows the whole information which includes the subsequent information as a part, so that the subsequent information can be recognized efficiently. The third is the principle of reference frame in which the ‘-nundey’ clause plays a role of reference to judge the value of the subsequent information. (200words)
