Abstract

This thesis examines the sense of body reflected in Kim Jongsam’s poetry. In previous studies, critics have limited his poetry in the boundaries of transcendence, image or space and it cannot be denied that works of only a certain period have been read in a rather simplistic perspective. Thus, this paper attempts to focus on how George Lakoff and Mark Johnson’s ideas of the cognitive unconscious and embodied mind are reflected in Kim’s poetry. From the standpoint of Lakoff and Johnson’s argument that the reality is an embodied reality, Kim Jongsam’s poetry can also be read as metaphorical systems of embodied desires. Kim Jongsam’s poetry of life is not only literal but highly metaphorical and imaginative. This makes the rationality appearing in his verses is also far from cynical. It acts as natural emotions passing through the body. This is based on the idea that the mind is fundamentally embodied and the rationality is constructed through the body, and that most of our thinking is articulated through the body. In Kim Jongsam’s poetry, such articulation of bodily language are sometimes expressed in high restraint, sometimes in abundance of words, and in others as forms of aphasia. This thesis is interested in exploring how Kim Jongsam was a poet, who lived his life fully through his body. His perspective on life, his semantic networks used to understand the human being, his view on how to use metaphor for both poetry and life will be the central subjects of this exploration. This is how this paper’s analysis differentiates itself with from previous perspectives on Kim Jongsam’s poetry.
