Abstract

The paper is designed to find out the poems which have not been published in Shin Dong-Mun’s collection of poem titled “With My Labor” (2004) and his chronology of works and understand the poetic meaning and characteristics of those poems. This paper focuses on 4 poems: “Pungseongi No. 32”, “Short poems of Chameleon”, “As If War Were Old Stories 10 Years Ago”, and “Theory of Non Existence” which were found in the florilegium “Poem’s Garden” (1958), the initial issue of literary magazine “Poem Work” (1959), and the initial issue (1963) and second issue (1963) of literary coterie magazine “Reality”. Up to now, it has been recognized that the key topic of the poems written by Shin Dong-Mun in his early days is on anxiety and the key characteristic of those poems is automatism by using the modernism technique based on the hand-on experience of the Korean War and that on the other hand, the key topic of his poems in his later days is on negation and the main characteristic of those poems is related to participation poems having the ideology of realism based on the April Revolution. Though the “Pungseongi No. 32” has the same topics and characteristics as those of his poems written in his early days, the topics of the poem “Short poems of Chameleon” are ethics and self-consciousness and the poem is a satirical poem in the modernism, which is not related to his experience of the Korean War. The topic of the poem “As If War Were Old Stories 10 Years Ago” is anxiety and it is the poem written by using modernism technique and automatism based on his hand-on experience of the war. It means that the poem is a modernism-related poem, but not a participation poem having the ideology of realism and also has the same topics and characteristics as those of the poems authored in his early day. Though the topics of “Theory of Non Existence” are the negation which is the topic for the poems written in his later days, this poem is not related to the ideology of realism but is the satirical poem having a modernism ideology and having the same characteristics as those of his poems written in his early days. These poems are very meaningful as they overturn the argument that the topic of the poem in his early days is anxiety while that in his later days is negation and the conventional characteristics of his peoms authored in his early days and later days. The poems “Missing in April” and “Silgi – Pungseongi Silho” found by Yoo Seong-Ho from “Shinpungto – Shinpungto Collection of Peom I” (1959) belong to the poems authored in his early days with respect to their topics and characteristics as well as with respect to the time of actual writing.
