김남조의 70여년의 시쓰기를 지탱해온 것은 무엇인가. 본고는 이것에 대한 물음을 찾고자 김남조의 시를 들여다본다. 김남조의 시쓰기는 자신의 시에 대한 반복된 성찰을 수반한다. 이것은 자신이 언급한 ‘시적 진실성’을 확보하기 위한 스스로의 노력이다. 시에 대한 열정으로 나타나는 시쓰기의 결실을 김남조는 또다시 탐색한다는 점에서 열정에 대한 메타적 열정의 모습을 드러낸다. 자신의 시를 함량미달의 부족한 것으로 치부하는 것도, 역설적으로 시쓰기를 지속하게 하는 반성적 행위가 되며, 이 과정에서 수반되는 존재론적 통증을 김남조는 그대로 시로 재생하고자 한다. 이러한 점에서 김남조의 ‘시적 진실성’은 ‘진정성’의 개념과 닮아 있다. 그러나 김남조의 진정성이 특별한 이유는, 단순히 시쓰기에 대한 내적 탐색의 과정을 수반한다는 점에 있는 것이 아니다. 김남조는 시쓰기 과정에서 소외된 언어를 바라본다. 미처 시가 되지 못한 언어들을 재사유함으로써 ‘외부’ 언어가 지닌 새로운 가능성을 포착한다. 이는 ‘언어적 타자’, 다시 말해 은폐된 언어를 재생하는 과정이자, 김남조만의 새로운 시적 사유의 가능성을 만들어내는 원동력이다. 김남조의 진정성이 지향하는 궁극적인 지점은, 그의 시에서 ‘빛’과 ‘어둠’의 이미지가 만들어내는 행간의 비유에서 촉발된다. 이것은 절망 속에 내재된 희망을 찾는 일이며, 은폐된 타자들을 재생하여 ‘미래의 시’를 찾아내는 열쇠가 된다. 그리고 열쇠를 김남조는 진정한 ‘시인 됨’에서 찾아낸다. 이러한 점에서 김남조의 진정성의 시학은 초월적 존재의 도래가 아닌, 지나간 것에 대한 작은 변화의 실천과 열정에서 희망을 바라보는 벤야민의 메시아주의와 맞닿는다. 김남조의 진정성은 무한한 자기 성찰로 다가갈 수 있는 행간의 가능성이자 희망의 메시지다.
Abstract
What has supported Kim Nam-jo's 70 years of poetry? This paper looks into Kim Nam-jo's poem to find the answer to this question. Kim Nam-jo's poetry writing entails repeated reflection on his poetry. This is his own endeavor to secure the "poetic sincerity" he mentioned. The fruits of poetry writing revealed through his aspiration for poetry represent meta-passion as he explores the fruits of poetry again. Dismissing his own poem as insufficient in quality is paradoxically a reflective act which enables the author to continue writing poetry. Kim Nam-jo actually desires to reproduce the ontological pain entailed in the process as it is. From this viewpoint, Kim Nam-jo's "poetic sincerity" is similar to the concept of "authenticity." However, what makes Kim Nam-jo's authenticity unique is not simply that it encompasses a process of internal exploration through poetry. Kim Nam-jo observes the language isolated from the poetry writing process. By re-contemplating languages that have not turned into poetry, it captures the new possibilities that 'external' languages possess. This is the process of reproducing a "verbal other," in other words, a hidden language, which is the driving force behind Kim Nam-jo's creation of a new possibility of poetic contemplation. The ultimate point that Kim Nam-jo's authenticity pursues is propelled by an analogy between lines formed by the images of "light" and "dark" presented in his poems. This is deemed as the search for hope inherent in despair, and becomes the integral key to discovering a "poem of the future" by reproducing the hidden others. Then, Kim Nam-jo finds the key in the true essence of 'Being a poet'. In this respect, Kim Nam-jo's poetics of authenticity is not in accordance with the emergence of transcendent beings, but with Benjamin's Messianism that spots hope from the practice of small changes in what has passed and their passion. Kim Nam-jo's authenticity is considered as a possibility and message of hope between lines that one can approach toward infinite self-reflection.
