초록
Enterocytozoon hepatonenaei is a microsporidian parasite infecting several penaeid shrimp species. Black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) is the first host species from which E. hepatonepaei was described. However, white leg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) is more vulnerable to infection and suffer from growth retardation with subsequent economic loss. In Korea, E. hepatonenaei has been reported from the frozen P. vannamei commodities and aquaculture farms but not from P. monodon. We inves- tigated the presence of E. hepatopenaei in the frozen P. monodon (n=60) imported from Malaysia. We conducted macroscopic examination with the naked eye and microscopic examination with the smear specimens after chromotrope 2R staining. We also conducted PCR targeting the SSU rDNA and spore wall proteins. All the specimens showed no abnormal appearance, but 6.7% of samples harbored E. hepatonepaei mature spores by microscopic observation. PCR revealed that 11.7% (SSU rDNA) and 28.3% (spore wall proteins) were E. hepatopenaei-positive. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that all the sequences obtained in this study were placed in the same clade as those of E. hepatonepanei of penaeid shrimps from other Asian countries. Although there is still no evidence that E. hepatopenaei is transmitted to susceptible host species by frozen shrimp commodities, care should be taken because E. hepatopenaei has already been reported in P. vannamei aquaculture farms in Korea, and the host specificity of E. hepatopenaei is thought to be low.
