Abstract

This study analyzes the aesthetic structure of “walking, fantasy, and reflection” in the poetry of Ki Hyung-do, utilizing the theoretical frameworks of Walter Benjamin and Jean Grenier. Against the backdrop of alienation, anonymity, and structural oppression accompanying Korea’s rapid industrialization and urbanization in the 1980s, Ki Hyung-do’s poetry juxtaposes the observations of the urban “walker” with moments of inner reflection. For the poet, “walking” is an act of exploring both the urban environment and the inner truth of the subject, synthesizing Benjamin’s flâneur concept and Grenier’s contemplative approach. Ki Hyung-do’s “fantasy” intensifies existential anxiety and loss through repetitive and heterogeneous urban imagery, employing “montage” and “allegory” rather than didactic fable. Furthermore, “reflection” is revealed through silence and contemplation, expressing a pursuit of self-meaning amidst wounds, deprivation, and the suffering of others. This aesthetic structure allows his poetry to probe the boundaries where fantasy and everyday reality intersect, facilitating ontological inquiry, inner healing, and ethical distance. Ultimately, the fragmented urban landscape and inner solitude are aesthetically organized, culminating in a poetics of self- reflection.
