Abstract

This thesis attempts to examine the meaning of the child’s death, which appears repeatedly in Kim Jong-sam’s poem, from a psychoanalytic perspective. In particular, it analyzes how the unconscious compulsion caused by war trauma is embodied as an image of death in poetry, and illuminates the implications of the ‘voice’ that repeatedly appears in this process through Lacan’s theory. Despite being pure, a child dies in the absurdity of society and the world. This death goes beyond mere reflection of reality, and can be extended to sublimation to overcome the negativity of reality. Death is the subject matter that appears in the works of many poets. The meaning to be revealed through death must be different for each poet. Poet Kim Jong-sam wrote a lot of poems about death from the early days to the late poems. There are many reasons for writing poems related to death. Kim Jong-sam is a poet who embodies the death of Moonwoo, Jeon Bong-rae, the death of his brother, the death of his mother, and his own death from illness. Poet Kim Jong-sam is even known as a sample of pure poetry, but one of the things that really influenced his pure and abstract poetry is the war experience. After experiencing death indirectly through the war experience, poet Kim Jong-sam wrote poems related to death from the first poem and continued the trend until the later period. Poet Kim Jong-sam often features children in his poems. Young children usually appear as marginalized and lonely characters. What is peculiar is that children often die in Kim Jong-sam’s poems. A child is the purest being and one that must be protected by society or the state. Nevertheless, when a child is dying, society or the state does not play its role. One of the ways to reveal the discord with the world is that children. In addition, Kim Jong-sam often reveals his voice in psalms that reveal the death of children. The voice is different from the heavenly and artistic sounds mentioned in Kim Jong-sam’s study. The voice can play a role in revealing the hidden reality of reality while being excluded by reality. In the end, the voice revealed in Kim Jong-sam’s death of a child plays a role in making a gap and crack in the integrity of reality and reflecting on reality.
