Abstract
The aim of this study is to clarify the relationship among poetry, verse, and lyric in Kim Chun-soo’s poetics. Kim Chun-soo, through the discourse of Richard Green Moulton, accepted Aristotle’s view that distinguishes poetic literature from history. However, Moulton’s discussion still fails to explain the unique nature of poetry as a subgenre of literature, and also overlooks Aristotle’s core argument that poetic literature must follow the law of probability and necessity. This operated as a limitation in Kim Chun-soo’s literary criticism as well, making it difficult to concretely explain what determines or transforms the form of poetry. It can be said that the theoretical gap that Moulton overlooked in Aristotle, and which remained unresolved in Kim Chun-soo’s poetics, was precisely the position of “lyric”. Beginning in the late 1970s, Kim Chun-soo’s poetics began to contemplate the “violence” of historical ideology, and he reinterpreted the core of lyric ― the idea that the decisive origin of language can be conceived as the subject’s inner self ― as an act of resistance against historical ideology. At this point, the versification of poetry can be reborn as a principle that reveals the subject’s inexpressible emotion by unraveling the network of signifiers and images ― beyond the formal rule of repetition within individual texts ― while taking into account the long-standing genealogy of semiotic linguistic acts. This study not only traces and elucidates the fundamental concepts that constitute Kim Chun-soo’s poetics and their relationships, but also attempts a complete elucidation of the poetic by proposing a logic that binds lyric and verse together.
