Abstract
In an era of rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and information and communication technology (ICT), numerous transformations are occurring not only across various industries but also in everyday life. Japanese language education is also facing challenges and evolving trends brought about by the advent of AI. This paper explores of the role of AI education in Japanese language departments and universities, with a particular focus on fostering AI literacy among students in the humanities and language fields. First, the paper provides an overview of the current state of AI-related courses integrated into the curricula of Japanese language departments, faculties, and universities. The focus is on investigating the number and content of AI-related courses offered in Japanese language departments and their affiliated faculties and universities in Taiwan. Next, the study presents and analyzes several representative examples of AI-related courses. Through an investigation of the current state of AI-related education in Japanese language departments in Taiwan, this paper reflects on the status, issues, and challenges of AI education in these departments and the broader humanities field. The findings reveal that more than one-third of Japanese language departments in Taiwan offer AI-related courses, while another one-third offers such courses as part of liberal education or shared curricula at the faculty or university level. However, about one-third of departments do not offer any AI-related courses at all. Since most of these courses are electives, students’acquisition of AI knowledge remains largely passive. At the department level, the courses mainly focus on the application of AI in Japanese language learning and translation. At the faculty level, courses are based on AI utilization skills within the framework of digital humanities. At the university level, courses are designed to introduce basic AI concepts. Collaborative courses between departments, faculties, and universities are also being promoted to bridge gaps in AI-related knowledge.
