A Study to Develop a Model of Korean Teachers' Grammar Teaching Competencies

This study aims to develop a competency model in teaching Korean Grammar as a foreign language. To this end, the author has divided the competency model into three domains: knowledge, skills, and attitudes. In addition, grammar teaching competencies and corresponding indicators have been developed for each domain. The model has been further refined through focus group interviews and expert validation. Additionally, the survey has been conducted on experienced Korean teachers to observe their perceptions of the importance of each grammar teaching competency. The results have been used to propose sub-factors of the competencies and to validate their reliability. The final model of Korean grammar teaching competencies comprises ten competencies: (1) Possessing a comprehensive knowledge of grammar teaching content, (2) Understanding of learners, (3) Designing and implementing lessons, (4) Analyzing and utilizing instructional materials, (5) Explaining grammar and analyzing errors, (6) Assigning homework and assessment, (7) Facilitating learner interaction, (8) Engaging in reflection and self-improvement, (9) Demonstrating a passion for teaching grammar, and (10) Maintaining a learner-centered attitude. The finalized model will be used to diagnose Korean teachers' competence in teaching grammar.
