Abstract

Purpose: The goal of this study was to develop specialized guidelines for designing digital textbooks that are accessible to visually impaired students and can be effectively utilized by teachers in a universal classroom setting. Method: Based on the CAST UDL guidelines, an analysis of prior research on digital textbook design for visually impaired students was conducted to develop a draft set of design principles. To ensure the validity of these principles, a two-round Delphi method with experts was utilized to derive the final design principles. Results: Design principles related to providing various means of representation, expression, and engagement were developed. In the cognitive domain, 19 guidelines were derived; in the strategic domain, 7 guidelines; in the affective domain, 13 guidelines; in the access aspect, 22 guidelines; in the build aspect, 10 guidelines; and in the internalize aspect, 7 guidelines were derived respectively. Conclusion: The developed design principles are expected to have positive impacts on the creation of digital textbooks that are more accessible to visually impaired students. Furthermore, additional research is needed to apply AI technology to provide more user-friendly intelligent digital textbooks by diagnosing the environmental settings of media, options, assistive device settings, preferred learning styles, interest topics, and methods according to the level of the learner's disability.
