Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of using movie clips on Korean high school students' learning of English speech act rules, with a special emphasis on three speech act areas such as request, refusal and apology. The subject of this study are 48 Korean high school students in Seoul, Korea, and they are divided into two groups: an experimental group using movie clips and a traditional control group. The data of this study consist of DCT (Discourse Completion Test) written responses, and utterances obtained from role-plays between the participants and an English native speaker. The main results of the study are as follows: first, the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in the apology speech act, which indicates the superiority of the speech act instruction using movie clips over the traditional text-based instruction. Secondly, the English speech act instruction using the movie clips was found to be more beneficial to low proficiency students than high proficiency students. Thirdly, the experimental group participants, especially the low proficiency group, showed positive attitude change in such affective aspects as motivation, confidence, and interest. Based on these findings, some pedagogical suggestions are made on effective ways of using movie clips in the teaching of speech act rules to Korean EFL students.
