his study aims to show the aspects of code switching in K-pop lyrics depending on the generations of Korean idols and to describe its discourse functions by illustrating each type in detail. For this purpose, 427 idol songs with code switching into English were analyzed concerning inter-sentential code switching and intra-sentential code switching after defining and dividing Korean idols into four generations. The findings of the study show that since 1996, code switching into English in the lyrics of K-pop idol songs has increased gradually and that several discourse functions of code switching can be identified. The discourse functions of code switching in K-pop lyrics include a referential function, directive function, expressive function, metalinguistic function, and poetic function. Code switching in them also have discourse functions to grab attention, water down messages, and make retention.
