After 30 years of running primary health care posts in remote areas of Korea, the work of community health practitioners(CHPs) is being challenged, especially in islands. This study aims to illuminate the duty and retirement characteristics of the island CHPs, which will be taken into account when redesigning the duties and function of CHPs. In this exploratory study, 467 sample CHPs were surveyed using internet based questionnaire. Among those, 25 were island CHPs. The island CHPs were compared with rural and city area CHPs through ANOVA, Scheffe and Dunnett's T3, Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test using SPSS 14.0. Island CHPs were involved in more primary health care post, had less graduate school education, had fewer college-attending children and attended social gathering less frequently. They worked shorter periods, had more jobs before this current one, and were less satisfied with their work. Still, fewer island CHPs thought their duty and function needed change. With regard to retirement, time left until retirement was shorter for island CHPs, but they wanted to work longer. There was no difference in retirement preparedness but their plans after retirement were different. More island CHPs planed to work after retirement instead of doing leasure activities. The duty and retirement characteristics of Island CHPs differed when compared to CHPs working in other areas. These characteristics should be taken into consideration when redesigning their duty and function, especially since their work environment island is so unique.
