초록

This study examined the current dispersion of vegetation throughout Hongdo by conducting field survey from October, 2012 to April, 2013. A plant community is classified into three communities: Carex boottiana, Opuntia ficus-indica and Echinochloa crusgalli. Problems involved in maintaining breeding grounds for a black tailed gull are as follows:First, a plan for vegetation restoration in degraded areas is required. Recently, the regional torrential rains caused soil erosion in the parts of degraded areas where vegetation recovery rates were poor. Thus secondary damage of soil erosion is expected if no implements are made. Second, Opuntia ficus-indica distributed on the southeastern slop requires managing. The Opuntia ficus-indica community is considered incongruent with the reproduction of seabirds. However, since Korea has little data on the growth and development of Opuntia ficus-indica, a comprehensive study is required. It is true that the community is well known for its preservation of species resources, but the measurements of preservation and maintenance of breeding grounds should be reconsidered since it is not the best breeding grounds for black tailed gull. Finally, it is necessary to get rid of mammals such as a gutter rat and cat which inhabit Hongdo. Their short life circle and high reproduction rate can cause a sincere damage to seabirds. Recently, rodenticides and rattraps are known to be effective in eradicating rodents and mammals, and frames to capture cats are presented for terminating cats. In conclusion in order to solve the problem of breeding seabirds, the opinions of many experts from different fields should be reflected in planning and implementation of maintaining seabirds.

Abstract
