Abstract

The aim of this study was to suggest the improvement direction by reviewing the Radiation Management System applied within the food sector context. In order to respond to the accident situation that occurred in Fukushima, the Korean government has been trying to set up an emergency response system. The government is especially interested in enhancing the Food Safety control and ensuring the safety of food supply. The Korean Radiation Management System consists of two major parts, which are response actions that may be taken in the event of a radioactive leakage accident in neighboring countries and national territory. In neighboring countries, the food sector of each government agencies copes with accidents by establishing the manual in the event of radiation leak. In contrast, in this nation, the system for dealing with such accidents depends primarily on the manual prepared by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety(MFDS). In terms of other country's radiation monitoring system, Japan uses the Nuclear Disaster Management Manual after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster. In the U. S, public authorities take measures in accordance with food safety instructions in the event of radiation or nuclear. EU takes appropriate actions based on the manual and prevents the spread of potential radioactive contamination to other areas. Due to the Fukusima nuclear accident, social concerns are focused on the radiation management system of the seafood sector. All these systems are mainly based upon rapid response actions to radiological accidents. In the case of Korea, difficulties still remain in responding effectively to nuclear incidents. To solve the problems related to the radiation monitoring system, it is necessary to strengthen the emergency response manual and build a cooperative system between government departments. It is also important to use an appropriate and targeted risk communication to promote food safety and security.
