1930-1940년대 도서지역 사립초등학교의 운영실태 -‘私立草島學校 設立ㆍ人事關係綴(1936-1945)’분석 -

Abstract

The process of establishing elementary school in Korea during the Japanese colonial period can be divided into four periods. The period of private schools, one school every three myeons, one school for every myeon and the final stage of mandatory education. The subjectt of this study, the Chodo Private School in Yeosu, Jeollanam-Do was approved in December 1936 and opened in May 1937. Namely, in the mid-1930s, residents from the far-off Chodo Island, Samsan Myeon and Yeosu made a joint pledge to contribute the sales of marine seeds for children education. By offering their certificates of asset as collateral they established the Chodo private school. The school kept an important material, a collection of official documents related to its establishment process, teacher appointment and other materials from 1936 to 1945 (Korean independence). This documents provide a good insight to the situation during this period. It also shows us the residents' efforts involved in the process of obtaining approval from the Governor-General of Korea to establish a private school in the 1930s. Thus‘The Establishment of Chodo Private School and Personnel File’is a central tool in understanding and examining the operations(curriculum and rules, revenue and expenditure, actual teachings of the teachers) of Chodo Private Elementary School in Yeosu during the Japanese colonial period of the 1930’s and 40’s.
