Abstract

There have been lots of studies estimating the export demand function for Korea and industrial countries. In the standard export demand model, the income and the exchange rate are the most important factors to judge the behavior of export flows. One need of such studies is to find the determinants of export demand in order to measure the behaviors of the demand for exports with respect to its determinants. This paper specifies seafood exports as a function of the exchange rate and foreign economic activity which is measured in terms of industrial production. We employ five exchange rates, which include the nominal exchange rate (won per US dollar), the narrow and wide nominal effective exchange rates, and the narrow and wide real effective exchange rates to select the most appropriate exchange rate. As this paper deals with time series data on the variables of the export demand model, there is the chance of non-stationarity implying the spurious relationship among the variables from the OLS estimates. The augmented dickey-fuller ADF test is performed both with an intercept and no trend, and with an intercept and a trend. This test assumes the null hypothesis of non-stationarity of the time series against the alternative hypothesis of stationarity. We find that the hypothesis of non-stationarity in the data series is accepted for all variables in the level form. In such a situation, the application of the OLS method to the model will result in the spurious relation between export demand and its determinants. However, when the ADF test is applied for all the variables in the first difference form, the hypothesis of non-stationarity in the data series is rejected. The econometric technique like the Engle-Granger two step procedure, which is mostly used in applied economics in the cases of non-stationarity time series data, rejects the hypothesis of non-stationarity in the export model. We show that the reaction of the exports to a positive industrial production shock rises for the first five months, thereafter it stays at an elevated level. Exports increase after an NEERW shock for four months and then fall steadily back to the original level.
