Abstract

Butterflies belonging to the order Lepidoptera are mainly daytime insects and are sensitive to environmental changes such as climate change, making them useful indicator species for identifying their impacts. In this study, we analyzed the diversity of butterflies living in five wetland protection areas on Jeju Island, which is located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula and has a unique environment. A total of 66 species of butterflies from five families were found to be distributed in the Jeju wetland protection areas, which showed significantly higher biodiversity compared to the research results around Wando, located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. It is thought that the reason for the high butterfly diversity in the Jeju wetland protection areas is that the wetland protection areas are distributed from lowlands to highlands, so both butterflies and northern species are distributed. When examining the families, the family Nymphalidae was the most prevalent with 29 species, similar to other studies, but the number of species was more than twice as high. When examining each wetland, Muljangori-oreum, 1100 Altitude, Mulyeongari-oreum, and Dongbaekdongsan showed a certain level of diversity, but Sumeunmulbaengdui showed low diversity due to its relatively difficult access and dense forest. In particular, the wetland protection area located in Jeju Island is considered to require special conservation and management as it has more nationally designated management targets than the surrounding areas. Based on the results of this study, it is thought that continuous monitoring is necessary as it has a richer diversity and more nationally designated management targets than the surrounding areas, and in particular, it is judged that additional population surveys in the current monitoring will be more helpful for wetland conservation. In addition, the results analyzed in this study are expected to be utilized as important basic data for identifying the impacts of climate change and environmental changes in the future and establishing management measures.
