Abstract
There are approximately 280 butterfly species in South Korea, representing the entire Korean Peninsula. While the number of species is small compared to other insects, they are widely used as ecosystem indicator species to assess the impact of environmental changes such as climate change. This study conducted a biodiversity analysis of the butterfly community in the Shinan Jangdo Mountain Wetland Protected Area on Daejangdo Island, Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, located in the southwestern part of South Korea. In this study, a total of 33 species in 6 families were found through seasonal surveys conducted in the spring, summer, and fall of 2024, along with previously surveyed data. In 2024, a total of 23 species in 5 families and 249 individuals were found through seasonal surveys. Overall, the Nymphalidae family had the highest dominance with 13 species. The 2024 survey also showed the Nymphalidae family as the most abundant, with 10 species. The Papilionidae family was the most numerous, with 82 individuals, due to the large summer presence of the Graphium sarpedon. Similar results were observed compared to neighboring islands such as Wando and Cheongsando island, demonstrating the characteristics of the southern islands. Biodiversity was highest in spring and fall, while relatively low in summer due to the high abundance of certain species. While seven nationally designated species are abundant, the protected area's small size makes the area vulnerable to environmental changes such as climate change, necessitating ongoing management. The results analyzed in this study will serve as valuable data for assessing the impacts of environmental change and developing management strategies.
