Abstract

Compatible predicates are technical terms which violate the selective restriction of technical terms that refer to one subject with different concepts or two different subjects and need to be considered in their contexts to found out the meaning. This study examined compatible predicates of Korean phonology to clarify accurate concepts of each predicate and discuss their appropriateness in consideration of contexts. The following are the results of this study: First, predicates in consonants, in vowels, and semi-vowels are used together in phonetics and phonology. Although we must use the appropriate ones for each context, however, it is not easy to examine their appropriateness. Second, predicates in consonants that relate to intonation are used together although they refer to different subjects in terms of phonetics. Their phonetic characteristics must be clarified. The study of their appropriateness depends on whether each predicate clearly reflects its phonetic characteristics. Third, compatible predicates that relate to double vowels have emerged because of the lack of discussion on whether sounds shall be considered a measuring scale. Thus, it is necessary to discuss how sounds shall be processed in phonology. It is inevitable that compatible predicates actually exist. This study is the premise of further discussion on why each predicate's concept does not have realistic meaning in the world of language.
