‘인간 영혼의 궁극적 깊이는 시간의 근원적 깊이다’라는 토마스 만의 통찰은 필름 「메멘토」나 「박하사탕」의 경우에도 해당하는 것처럼 보인다. 전자가 시간의 의도적 왜곡과 인물의 기획적 지배를 통해 시간의 심리적 깊이에 도달하려는 노력을 경주하고 있다면, 후자는 주제를 전달하기 위한 효과적인 방법으로 ‘창조적 회상’이라는 오래된 시간 기법을 차용한다. 궁극적으로 시간을 거슬러 가는 방식으로서의 기억이라는 심리적 자질을 이용해 한 인간의 일상에 균열을 내는 두 텍스트의 시간 사용 방식은, 두 텍스트가 예술이기 위한 참신한 실험으로 평가된다. 그 모험은 시간이 언어를 통해 ‘창조적 회상’으로서의 예술을 감상할 수 있는 기회를 대중에게 유쾌하게 제공한다. 그것은 문화상업주의 시대에 영화가 예술이기 위한 자기 언어의 획득과정을 통찰하게 하는 것처럼 보인다.
Abstract
The insight of Thomas Mann when he observed that 'The ultimate depth of human soul is the fundamental depth of time.' applies to the case of film 「Memento」 amd 「Peppermint Candy」. 「Memento」 and 「Peppermint Candy」as a way of going upstream against the flow of time joins an entirely new venture for it to deserve the category of art by using a psychological trait called memory and by creating a crack in the daily routine of a man. In the venture, time cheerfully provides the public with an opportunity of appreciating art as a form of ‘creative recall’ through language. It is an experiment that invites a film to gain an insight into the process of acquiring its language for the film to deserve the name of art in an age of cultural commercialism.
