Abstract

Based on the notion that increasing awareness on audience is important for student writers in teaching writing to develop students' writing skills, this paper examines the aspects on audience awareness of student writers. The following five questions were raised for this paper: (1) whether students think it is important to consider the audience when writing; (2) how much do they think about the audience when writing; (3) who do they evoke as the audience when a target audience is not set for them; (4) are they aware that they write considering different audiences; and (5) is there any correlation between the degree of students awareness of their audiences and the actual level of audience consideration. A questionnaire was given to 294 second, fourth and sixth graders in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do elementary schools, who were also given a writing task. The survey and student writing showed that audience awareness is important. The students thought that they were good writers if they think about the audience, and recognized that their writing should change when the audience changes. However they were lagging is actually considering the audience. When a target audience is not set, they set their teachers as the audience. But more fourth and sixth graders tended to set someone they do not know as the audience, showing the difference among the grades. The results of this study suggests the following. Students should be taught of specific methods on how to be aware of their audiences. They also should be provided with many opportunities to actually write for various audiences outside of class, and with situations where social interactions are emphasized.
