Abstract

The purpose of this writing is to look into the educational meaning of the Dragon tale for defending the fatherland of King Munmu in Shilla Dynasty period. To proprietary use this tale as educational materials, it would be first necessary to reasonably analyze and explain the tale. For a reasonable analysis, first, the political background underlying this tale was examined. The political situation where the tale for the country appeared was in a serious crisis at home and abroad. Therefore it seems that the tale was created for the purpose of effectively coping with such a crisis. Buddhist idea and Dragon God religion underlie King Munmu's tale, which was created by these two ideas being exquisitely combined. In the next, for a reasonable analysis, various aspects how the tale was handed down. The tale was very useful, so it assumes an aspect that it continues to be handed down and changed. Manpasikjeok(萬波息笛) in King Sinmun is completion of King Munmu's tale for the country and contents of materialization of defending the fatherland. It not only had continued to exist but also been widely handed down to the general public and, if necessary, had been re-created until the fall of Shilla Dynasty. The tale for the country is composed of peculiar stories difficult to find in other countries. It is expected the educational effect will be maximized if the tale is suitably utilized as materials for a tale education. The educational meanings of King Munmu's tale for the country can be summarized as follows. First, you can extend imagination through changes of King Munmu for the country. Second, you can learn wisdom through King Munmu's experience. Third, you can learn the role of an excellent leader through King Munmu's story. Fourth, you can grasp the customs, habits, life, ideas, and religion of our ancestors through Dragon God religion.
