Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate an aspect of the phase of socio-cultural transition that cities in China encounter these days by examining the strategy for restructuring urban identity promoted by each level of governments in China through cultural policy and plan for the cultural industry and the process in which cultural products of the city alternate or collide with each other. For this purpose, this study chose Chongqing, a city, which experiences rapid urbanization and is called a sample of China at the time as the research subject. This study investigated the urban culture of Chongqing that experiences rapid urbanization, analyzing cultural products and cityscape in parallel by avoiding the division between the material and the cultural or between the physical landscape and the reproducible space and considering cultural texts important media that record contradictions and conflicts in the city. This study examined how the power and intent of the state operate in the process of the implementation of cultural policies in the regions and cities of China by comparing the aspect in which the government’s planning abilities are related and executed and the aspect in which the cultural products not included in the government’s plans are related to the government’s policy, with the urban planning and policy, cultural products and cityscape of Chongqing as texts. The spatial structure of the city and the arrangement design of the buildings themselves are the specific expressions of cultural codes. The government’s location in Chongqing and its change, the reconstitution of resistant culture that represents Chongqing city, the recall of the local culture of Chongqing as a historical place and the cultural landscape and urban culture of Chongqing reconstructed in visual media.
