제임스 스미스의 아비투스를 통한 몸의 욕망과 형성: 뉴노멀 시대의 고찰

뉴노멀 시대, 인간은 누구인가라는 주제가 화두로 떠올랐으며 어떻게 인간을 이해하여 기독교적 제자를 형성할 것인가가 중요한 주제가 되었다. 그런 면에서, 지난 십여 년 간 가장 영향력 있으며 대중적인 철학자이자 교육실천가이며 신학자로 평가받는 개혁주의자 제임스 스미스는 근대 이후의 주창된 인간관의 모순을 성경적으로 날카롭게 지적하며 인간은 예배하는 인간으로서 욕망하며 예전하는 동물이라고 주장한다. 스미스는 아우구스티누스의 전통을 계승하여 인간은 사랑하는 존재이며, 그것이 곧 우리의 존재와 궁극적 정체성이라는 인간론을 개혁주의적 관점에서 논리 있고 일관성 있게 논증한다. 특별히 스미스는 부르디외의 아비투스(Habitus) 개념을 소개하며 기독교 제자도의 형성은 기독교 세계관의 습득이 아닌 기독교적 아비투스의 습득이 필요하다고 설득력 있게 주장한다. 아비투스란 우리의 몸이 우리 삶의 내러티브를 통해 사회적 경험을 습득하며 얻게 되는 일종의 인식 틀로써, 실천 감각과 실천 논리라는 체험적 용어로 설명할 수 있다. 스미스는 몸의 앎과 습관의 형성을 통해 인간은 지각하며 상상하며 이야기하는 동물로서 인간론을 이해하며, 하나님 나라를 욕망한다는 것은 사회적인 몸과 삶의 방식에 대한 그 몸의 전망으로 통합하여 특정한 방식으로 좋은 삶(텔로스)을 꿈꾸며 욕망하고 실천한다는 것이다. 결국 스미스의 기독교 교육의 목적은 어떠한 지식의 축적과 앎을 넘어서서 마땅히 사랑하고 욕망해야 하는 바에 대한 것이며, 우리 인간에 대한 이해와 존재와 인식을 재구성하는 아비투스적 사고와 실천이 요구되는 것이다. 본 논문은 스미스의 예전적 인간론에 대해 밝히고 분석하며 비평 및 평가함과 동시에 그가 말하는 아비투스의 개념이 어떻게 기독교 교육과 신학 내에 적용되고 받아들여질 수 있는 지, 또한 어떤 면에서 그의 이론과 사상의 독특성을 가지며 고찰할 지점은 무엇인지에 대해 논증한다.
Abstract
In the new normal era, the topic of who is human has emerged significantly as an essential discourse. By understanding human beings, forming and shaping Christian disciples became an important topic. James K.A. Smith, the most influential and popular philosopher, education practitioner, and reformed theologian for the past decade, strongly argue humans as homo liturgicus are fundamentally animals shaped by worship practices. He mentions liturgies can be formative because it shapes what we desire and what we love through the concept of Habitus. Habitus is a sort of cognitive framework that our body acquires as it acquires social experiences through the narrative of our lives. In this sense, Christian worship is a kind of habitus that leads to our imaginations and orientations our desires, and love. The body, repeated practices, involves various narrative spaces that shape the imagination, which in turn forms our desire and orientation. Therefore, Christian education should be formative, not just a Christian worldview that focuses on the information. As a result, Smith suggests various liturgical practices as an alternative to the shape of Christian character based on the concept of habitus proposed by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. This paper sought to clarify, analyze, and even criticizes and evaluates Smith’s liturgical human being, as well as how his concept of Habitus can be applied and accepted into Christian education and theology, and in some respects the uniqueness of his philosophical theory and thought.
