이 글은 지난 90년대를 통해 창조-진화 논쟁에서 새로운 힘으로 부상하며 미국 지식인 사회에 큰 논쟁을 불러일으켰던 지적설계운동의 탄생과정을 살펴본다. 특히 지적설계운동의 내부적 전개과정에 초점을 맞추어 그 기원을 모태, 태동, 탄생의 세 단계로 나누어 살펴볼 것이다. 먼저 생화학자 마이클 덴턴이 1986년 출간한 『진화: 위기의 이론』은 다윈주의 비판의 기본적 틀을 제공했으며 화학자 찰스 삭스턴은 지적설계의 핵심 개념을 제공했다. 덴턴과 삭스턴의 작업이 지적 설계론의 모태가 되었다면 이를 지적운동으로 조직한 이는 법학자 필립 존슨이었다. 이에 더해 생화학자 마이클 비히의 『다윈의 블랙박스』(1996)는 첫 해에만 5만부가 팔려나가는 큰 성공을 거두며 대중적으로 지적설계운동의 과학적 신뢰성을 확보하는데 기여했다. 끝으로 포괄적인 틀을 제공함으로써 지적설계의 이론적 골간을 마무리한 이는 수학자이며 철학자인 윌리엄 뎀스키였다. 뎀스키는 고도의 확률이론을 동원해 지적설계를 경험적으로 탐지할 수 있는 메커니즘을 제시했으며 이로써 지적설계는 그 이론적 탄생을 보게 된 것이다. 이 글에서는 이들 다섯 인물을 중심으로 지적 설계론의 기원을 살핀다.
Abstract
This paper will examine how the intelligent design theory came about during the 1990s in the U.S. and will specifically follow its internal development, focusing on five key figures. First, Michael Denton published Evolution: the theory in crisis in 1986 that provided the movement with a theoretical platform from which they could criticize Darwinism. Along with Denton, Charles Thaxton gave the theory some of the key concepts. If the works of Denton and Thaxton were the background for the intelligent design movement, Philip Johnson's Darwin on Trial (1993) and Michael Behe's Darwin's Blackbox (1996) gave the movement the social recognition. Lastly, William Dembski developed a theoretical framework that synthesized various concepts and approaches of the intelligent design. With the Dembski's work, we see the birth of the intelligent design theory.
