1859년 찰스 다윈이『종의 기원』을 출간한 이래 기독교의 창조신앙은 심각한 도전에 직면하게 되었다. 생명과 인간의 기원에 관한 다윈주의적 관점은 창세기의 기록과 충돌하는 것처럼 보이기 때문에 진화론은 과학과 기독교 신학 사이의 끊임없는 논쟁 혹은 대화의 주제가 되었다. 진화론에 대한 기독교의 반응은 창조론, 지적설계 창조론, 진화론적 유신론이다. 오늘날 우리나라에서는 과학의 진화론과 기독교의 창조론의 논쟁이 본격적으로 전개되고 있다. 이 논쟁은 교과서진화론개정추진회(이하 교진추)가 창조과학회와 더불어 과학 교과서에서 진화론을폐기하거나 창조론을 병행하여 가르치는 것을 목표로 지속적인 반진화론 캠페인을 전개함으로써 초래되었다. 현재의 한국사회에서 진화론-창조론 논쟁은 일시적인 현상에 그치기보다는 앞으로도 계속 격화되어결과적으로 과학과 기독교 사이의 갈등을 부추기고 일반인들의 기독교에 대한 반감을 더욱 고조시킬 가능성이 높다. 본 논문의 연구 목적은 이러한 상황과 관련하여 앞으로 점점 더 심화될 것으로 예상되는 한국사회에서 과학과 종교 사이의 갈등을 완화하고, 상호이해와 대화를 증진시키기 위하여 진화론과 대화를 통하여생명에 대하여 보다 통섭적인 이해가 가능한 신학적 방향을 제시하며,나아가 오늘날의 생태위기의 시대에 적합한 창조신앙의 의미를 재해석하는데 있다. 이러한 연구 목적을 위하여 본고는 과학과 종교의 간학문적 대화에서의 비판적 실재주의를 기본적인 연구방법론을 사용한다. 과학과 종교의 대화를 가능하게 하는 인식론적 전략으로서 비판적 실재주의에 따르면 과학과 종교가 서로 실재를 파악하고 묘사하는 방식은 다르지만양자가 공히 진리를 향한 진지한 탐구라는 것을 인정한다. 본고에서는특히 지난 수 십년간 과학과 종교의 대화 담론을 주도해 온 학자 중에한 명인 이얀 바버의 과학과 종교의 관계 모델을 빌려 오늘날 한국사회에서 전개되는 반진화론 운동을 분석하고, 보다 갈등을 해소할 수 있도록 창조신앙에 관한 신학적 재해석을 제시하고자 한다. 창조신앙이란창세기에 나오는“하나님께서 온 세상과 동식물과 인간을 창조하셨다”는 기록을 문자주의적으로 받아들이지 않고, 성서비평 방법론을 따라창조기사가 기록된 역사적 배경과 맥락을 고려하여 하나님의 창조에관한 신앙고백의 메세지를 오늘날의 현실 속에서 재해석하는데 관심을기울인다. 따라서 창조신앙은 진화론과 반드시 대립할 필요는 없으며독립적이거나 대화, 혹은 포용의 가능성을 열어두고 있다. 이러한 연구 목적에 따라서 본고의 내용은 우선 현재 진행형인 교진추의 진화론 삭제 청원을 둘러싼 논쟁을 비판적으로 검토하고, 그 다음에는 진화론의 요지와 신학적 도전의 내용, 과학적 창조론의 태동과입장, 지적 설계론과 그 신학적 의미, 그리고 마지막으로는 진화론적 유신론을 제시하고자 한다. 이러한 연구를 통하여 우주론 및 진화론 등현대과학과 대화가 가능하며, 마지막으로 생태계 파괴로 문명사적 위기를 맞고 있는 21세기에 적절한 창조신앙의 신학적 방향을 제시하고자한다.
Abstract
Since Charles Darwin had published his famous book, The Origin of Species in 1859, Christian belief in God’s creation has been challenged seriously. The explanation of theory of evolution about the origin and evolutionary development of life and human was seemed to conflict with the view of Genesis. Nowadays the conflict between theory of evolution and creationism is getting more and more serious. This conflict was raised by anti-evolutionary campaigns led by the Society for Textbook Revision (STR), the Institute for Revision of Evolutional Textbook (RET) and Korea Association for Creation Research (KACR). The goal of these organizations is to remove the contents of the theory of evolution, or at least to include the creationism in the science textbook. Therefore,the conflict between theory of evolution and Creationism could be worse in the future, and it must result out many problems in the relationship between science and religion as well as certain hostility from non-Christian people against Christianity in society of Korea. In considering this situation, this paper aims to suggest a theological interpretation on belief in creation which is able to release the conflict in one hand, promote some useful dialogue in the other hand between science in Korea, and present an interpretation appropriate in an age of ecological crisis. In order to fulfil these aims, this paper employs critical realism in science and religion as a research methodology. Critical realism is considered to many leading scholars in science and theology as an epistemological strategy enabling build a bridge between two domains because it recognizes both as reliable pursuit to seek truth. According to the aim and methodology of the research, firstly this paper critically examines the arguments raised by scientific creationism, secondly the core explanation in theory of evolution and its challenges to theology, thirdly the argument of intelligent design and its implications, and lastly the assertion of evolutionary theism.
