인간생명의 시작에 관한 성경적 이해 - 생명윤리 물음에 관한 실천적 함의를 중심으로 -

인간생명의 시작 물음은 생명윤리학의 ‘토대’ 물음이다. 이 글은 인간생명의 시작에 관한 성경적 입장을 밝힌 다음, 생명윤리학 물음에 관한 그 실천적 함의를 천착하는 데 목적이 있다. 성경은 생명의 시작점을 명시적으로 밝히고 있지는 않지만, 우리는 성경의 몇몇 구절을 통해 이를 추론할 수 있다. 하나님의 형상과 예수의 성육신 사건 등은 인간생명이 정자와 난자가 만나는 수정 순간에 시작됨을 말해준다. 즉, 우리는 특별한 그 어떤 본질적 속성으로 인해 인간인 것이 아니라, 하나님이 창조하였다는 그 한 가지 사실로 인간이며, 또 예수님은 출생 때가 아니라 임신한 바로 그 순간에 이미 성육신 하였기에, 인간생명은 수정 순간에 시작된다고 말할 수 있다. 또 시편 139:13-18, 욥기 3:3, 예레미야 1:5 등도 이러한 수정론을 지지한다. 이와 더불어 이 글은 수정론에 반대하는 ‘낙태 해석’ 구절(출애굽기 21:22), 인간 창조에 관한 생기설, 착상론을 옹호하는 개체성 논변 등을 비판적으로 검토할 것이다. 이러한 수정론에 따르면, 인공 임신중절, 체외수정, 배아연구 등은 원칙적으로 금지된다. 왜냐하면 이러한 행위는 이미 하나님이 창조한 인간생명을 파괴하는 비윤리적인 행위이기 때문이다. 강간, 근친상간, 산모 생명의 위독 등의 경우 임신중절이 옹호된다는 이유 등은 수정론에 대한 반대 논변이 되지 않는다. 이는 예외적인 경우이지, 결코 인간생명의 출발점 자체를 변경시키는 논변이 아니기 때문이다. 하지만 수정론은 기독교인으로 하여금 대리모의 도덕성에 관해 혼돈을 야기한다. 왜냐하면 비록 체외수정 행위가 비윤리적이라 하더라도, 이미 창조된 배아는 하나의 인간생명이기 때문에 대리모는 아이를 사고파는 행위가 아니라 아이를 양육하는 보모 역할을 하기 때문이다. 이에 관한 기독교 윤리학적 논의가 앞으로 더 깊게 천착되어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
When does human life begins? It is the central and foundational question in bioethics. I aims to investigate critically into this question from the point of Biblical view. Though the Bible does not tell us the concrete point of beginning of human life. we can infer it from God's Words. I will suggest that the Bible supports the fertilization thesis that a human life begins the moment a sperm and an egg are fertilized. And I will study on its practical implications in bioethical problems. Genesis 1:27 says. “So God created man in his own image. in the image of God he created him.” Although it is too vague to understand its meaning correctly. we are human not because we have some intrinsic property or properties but because God created us. A fertilized egg is created by God. Psalm 139:13-18. Job 3:3. and Jeremiah 1:5 support the fertilization thesis. And incarnation doctrine supports it too. However. there are some verses in the Bible that are incompatible with the fertilization thesis. Exodus 21:22 is one of them. It can be interpreted not as artificial abortion but miscarriage or premature birth. According to this view on the beginning of human life. artificial abortion. IVF. and embryo experiment are generally morally wrong. But we should discuss the morality of surrogate mother. In addition. we approach into bioethical problems with wisdom because pastoral caring must be based on not law of God but grace of God.
