Abstract
This study has a purpose to research how characteristics of individual background, religious background, and campus climate of students, who are attending a Christian university, could influence institutional commitment. In order to identify the research problems, this study surveyed 416 university students, who are attending Christian universities, which are four Christian universities with four-year-course, and final 385 surveys were utilized for analysis. First, this study found that, in the individual background, the institutional commitment is significantly higher when students live in a dormitory rather than they do not live in a dormitory, and when they have preference of their university at the time of admission. Also, in the religious background, this study found that students have significantly higher institutional commitment when they are attending a church and their parents are Christian rather than students who are not attending a church and their parents are not Christian and when they are Christian rather than students who are atheist. Second, this study found that influential factors of the institutional commitment are gender, admission preference, current religion, and recognition of campus climate. Specifically, this study found that they have the higher institutional commitment when they are male students rather than female students, they have higher preference at the time of admission, and they are Christian rather than they are not Christian. Also, this study found that sub-variables of the campus climate such as academic climate, relational climate, and religious climate are the most influential variables. Third, this study found that the gender, the admission preference, and the campus climate are common influential variables regardless of current religions of students. Related to the religious background, this study found that Christian students who are attending a church show high institutional commitment and the religious background of students who are not Christian does not influence the institutional commitment significantly. This study is meaningful in that it explored results on the correlation among the individual and the religious back ground of Christian university students, recognition of the campus climate, and the institutional commitment. Limitations of this study were given. Limitations of this study were given.
