기술 사회에서의 새로운 신화들에 대한 분석 -자크 엘륄의 기술 사상을 중심으로

자크 엘륄은 현대 기술 사회에서 등장하는 새로운 신화들, 특히 기술과 관련된 신화들에 대해 비판한다. 왜냐하면 오늘날 기술은 인간이 통제할 수 없는 자율적인 과정이며 신성화된 세계이기 때문이다. 엘륄에 따르면, 현대 기술 사회에 존재하는 다양한 신화는 역사, 과학, 국가, 정치, 돈, 성장, 진보, 스포츠, 광고, 대중매체, 정보처리기술이다. 예수 그리스도 안에서 해방된 그리스도인은 인간을 소외시키는 그런 신화들을 우상처럼 숭배하기를 그만두어야 한다. 엘륄은 현대 기술 사회의 그러한 문제에 대한 해결책이자 그리스도인의 특별한 행위로서 ‘자각’을 제시한다. 그런데, ‘자각’에 필수적인 요소는 현대의 신화들을 파괴하는 것이다. 그런 ‘자각’으로 두 가지 결과가 나온다. 첫째, 하나님이 역사의 흐름에 개입한 성육신이라는 ‘사건’을 세상에서 재인식하고 그 의미를 재발견하는 것이다. 성육신이라는 ‘사건’은 현대의 신화들과 반대되며, 오직 거기로부터 그리스도인은 생각과 삶에 반드시 필요한 영역을 재발견할 수 있다. 둘째, ‘신성불가침의 것’의 경계를 재발견하는 것이다. ‘지적 탐구’는 자체의 역량 너머에 있는 ‘신성불가침의 것’을 기계적 수단을 통해 예속시키고 부정할 수 있으며 짓밟을 수 있기에 ‘신성불가침의 것’ 너머로 가지 말아야 한다.
Abstract
Jacques Ellul criticizes new mythologies emerging in the modern technological society, especially those related to the technology. This is because the technology today is an autonomous process that cannot be controlled by humans and is a sacred world. According to Ellul, the various mythologies that exist in the modern technological society are history, science, state, politics, money, growth, progress, sports, advertising, mass media and information processing technology. The Christians liberated in Jesus Christ must cease to idolize such mythologies that alienate humans. Ellul presents 'awakening' as a solution to such problems in the modern technological society and as a special Christian act. By the way, the essential element for 'awakening' is to destroy the modern mythologies. Such 'awakening' results in two consequences. First, it is to recognize the 'incident' of Incarnation in which God intervened in the history and rediscover its meaning in the world. The 'incident' of Incarnation is contrary to the modern mythologies, and only from that 'incident' the Christians can rediscover the essential areas indispensable to the their thinking and lives. Second, it is to rediscover the boundary of the 'divine inviolability'. Intellectual inquiry should not go beyond the 'divine inviolability' because, through the mechanical means, it can subjugate, deny and trample the 'divine inviolability' beyond its own capability.
