이 논문의 목적은 헤크만의 견해를 따라, 길리건이 주장한 보살핌 윤리를 보편적인 하나의 도덕적 가치만을 인정하는 근대적 도덕 패러다임으로부터 벗어난, 다원적 가치들을 수용하는 새로운 도덕 패러다임으로 해석할 수 있음을 보이는 것이다. 보살핌 윤리에서 전제로 삼고 있는 관계적 자아는 관계 경험에 따라 구성되는 주체이며, 항상 변화의 가능성에 열려있다는 점에서 정의의 윤리가 전제하고 있는 데카르트적 주체와 그 성격이 다르다. 데카르트적 주체는 일원론적 진리를 추구하는 반면, 관계적 자아는 담론을 통해 진리를 구성한다. 이러한 점에서 헤크만은 보살핌 윤리에 대한 길리건의 주장은 20세기 후반의 철학적 담론에서 목격할 수 있는 패러다임의 변화와 그 성격이 같다고 주장한다. 헤크만의 견해에 따르면, 보살핌 윤리를 도덕 패러다임의 전환으로 해석할 때 길리건이 주장하고자 했던 바의 의미가 더욱 잘 살아날 수 있다. 적어도 하나 이상의 도덕적 관점이 존재한다는 길리건의 주장은 다원적 진리를 허용하는 도덕 패러다임 안에서 더욱 의미를 가질 수 있다. 이러한 새로운 도덕 패러다임 안에서 보살핌이 의미하는 것은 가부장적 사회에서 여성들에게 요구되어 왔던 자기희생적 규범이 아니다. 헤크만은 보살핌에 대한 이해를 보다 급진적으로 확장시킬 필요가 있다고 보는데, 그러한 개념이 바로 트론토가 제시하고 있는 도덕영역을 다시 생각해 보기 위한 토대가 될 수 있는 보살핌 개념이다. 보살핌에 대한 새로운 이해는 보살핌 윤리가 여성주의 정치적 실천에 유용하다는 것을 보여준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to defend Hekman's view that Gilligan's care ethics can be interpreted as a new moral paradigm. This new paradigm upholds multiple values, contrary to the modernist moral paradigm, which assumes a universal moral value. The relational self assumed by care ethics differs from the Cartesian subject assumed by justice ethics. On the conception of relational self by care ethics, our conception of self is formed through relational interactions with others, and can undergo changes. In addition, the Cartesian self pursues a monistic truth, whereas the relational self constitutes truths through discourse. From the above sort of consideration, Hekman argues that Gilligan's care ethics indicates a sea change which was undergone in late twentieth-century intellectual thought. According Hekman, Gilligan's point of view is better understood when it is taken as a paradigm shift in ethics. For her view that there are more than one moral perspective is significant within a pluralistic view of ethics. The interplay between care and justice, Gilligan argued, is possible within paradigm of care ethics that allows multiple moral voices. In this new moral paradigm, "care" does not mean a norm of self-sacrifice that has been called upon women in a patriarchal society. Hekman insists that our understanding of "care" needs to be extended. That is a concept of care, Tronto suggests, as a foundation on the basis of which we can rethink about the moral realm. A new understanding of "care" shows that care ethics is useful in feminist political practise.
