Abstract
Humans are essentially in need of care. Care thus understood indicates activities that help to maintain interdependent beings’ lives in an appropriate way. As the modern family narrative has been changing from the romantic love to the confluent love, the gender division of labor has become hollow. As an alternative to it, ‘universal care’ has been suggested and seriously discussed among scholars. Yet universal care is, wittingly or unwittingly, assumed to take the subject of care to be a nuclear family consisting of the traditional gender division such as male and female. Thus, in order to cope properly with the changing patterns of family, we need a more fundamental, pluralistic approach to the problem. In this regard, Eva Kittay’s idea of ‘labor of love’ and the doulia model whereby that idea is embodied provide us with important philosophical and social engineering insights into the issue as to how we can contend with change in family structure.
