Abstract
Human civilization has long relegated care to women as mere “housework.” It has been regarded as work well suited to women’s “natural” disposition, and such gendered assignments have gone unquestioned. However, today care is recognized as “labor,” and many societies view the equal sharing of care responsibilities between men and women as the ideal model of a family. Yet, discussions concerning the specific role of care workers in our society, as well as their appropriate social status and treatment, remain incomplete. This study examines three representative approaches to care workers and proposes a recognition theory perspective. First, it reviews the approach that considers domestic labor as a form of social labor, particularly advocating for the payment of wages for such work. Second, it examines the ethics of care approach, which emphasizes the unique nature of care. Even though a “caring for care” model has emerged—where care workers are regarded as individual agents and care communities support the performance of care work in various ways—there is a risk that an overemphasis on care may marginalize care workers. Finally, the study discusses the social recognition of care work and care workers, arguing that a recognition theory perspective can re-highlight the aspect of care as labor while still valuing the act of caring.
