원통한 감정은 억울함과 분함을 풀지 못해 한이 된 고통이다. 복수를 부정적인 것으로 보는 현대 철학의 전통에서, 원한의 대상을 갖는 원통함은 바람직하지 못한 것으로 취급되어왔다. 원통함이 맹목적이고 파괴적인감정으로 평가되기에, 원통한 이는 용서함으로써 원한을 풀 것을 요구받는다. 억울하고 분한 일을 참고 견딜 수밖에 없는 상황이 맺은 원한의 감정은 사회적으로 취약한 위치에 있는 이들의 감정이라고도 할 수 있다. 이것은 원한에관한 속담이나 설화, 소설이 주로 여성을 주인공으로 한다는 점에서도 확인된다. 이 글은 원통함이 파괴적이고 맹목적일 수 있다는 점을 부정하지 않으면서도, 동시에 그것의 건설적이고 합당한 측면이 그동안 일방적으로 무시되어왔음에 주목한다. 따라서 이 글에서는 원통한 감정이 갖는 특징에 주목하면서, 원통함을 부정적인 것으로 보는 시선은 원통함이 전하고자 하는 진실의주요한 측면을 외면하는 것일 수도 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 이것은 원통해하는이들을 외면하거나 비난하기 보다는 공감으로써 이해하고자 해야 할 윤리적책임에 관한 탐구이다.
Abstract
Bitterness is a pain that becomes han because of unsolved unjust, and resentful emotion. In the tradition of modern philosophy, which regards revenge as negative, bitterness concomitant with grudge has been treated as undesirable. As bitterness is considered as a blind and destructive emotion, it is required to release grudge by forgiveness. The emotions of bitterness, derived from situations where the bearers have to tolerate and stand their unjust and furious status, might be the feelings of those in a vulnerable social position. This is confirmed by the fact that protagonists of proverbs, tales or novels about han are usually women. This article, without denying that bitterness could be subversive and reckless, focuses on that its constructive and reasonable aspects have been unilaterally ignored so far. With emphasis on characteristics of bitterness, I would like to hold that the view considering bitterness as negative could be ignoring main aspects of a truth which could be conveyed by the bearder of that emotion. (Accordingly,) this is a quest for ethical responsibility to understand empathically rather than to deny or criticize those who feel it.
