Abstract

The Phase of Popular Culture in early 20th Century －Focusingon the Continuance and the Transformation of Siga; Park, Ae-KyungThe purpose of this study is to observe how premodern siga which was at the center of urban culture in the ninetenth century, had adapted to the media and technology introduced in the twentieth century. Through this examination, the procesby which premodern culture adapted to the new environment and by which traditional culturetransformed itself into modern popular culture wil be revealed.The basic arguments concerning the origins of popular culture can be generaly divided into two categories : the transplantation theory and the autonomous growth theory. This study wil try to sublate the dichotomy of transplantation and autonomous growth and analyze the phase when the genres of pre-modern siga passed through this period of duality. Through this proces, it can be revealed that the cultural experience in 19th century including the comunity of the consumers, the preference and the taste, the repertoires and the musician comunity formed the main elements of popularity in 20th century as a consequence of f a c i n g t h e c a p i t a l , t e c h n o l o g y , n e w l y i m p l a n t e d s t y l e s w h i c h w ere imported after 20th century. Furthermore this study wil analyze the inter relationships between premodern culture and modern culture and try to understand the complicityof the popular culture in early 20th and the circumstance of the hybridization.
