Abstract

Jeong hyeon-ung(1910∼1976) is an artist with a variety of aspects, including a painter, a bookkeeper, a cartoonist, an illustrator, and a writer. For Jung Hyun-woong’s illustrations, most researchers have been paying attention from early on in newspaper series and magazines. Most of these are studies in the field of vision. So it confirms the meaning of art history, Research in the field of literature focuses on comprehensive and historical research rather than detailed. Therefore, in order to establish the true meaning and value of Hyeonwoong Jung’s artwork, research that explores the meaning of individual works must be supplemented while simultaneously considering literature and visual fields. When it comes to searching for the meaning of individual works, Drama is a field in which Jeong hyeon-ung’s ability stands out. Jeong hyeon-ung has been interested in theater porn since he was a boy. He also worked as a stage device at the Buminkan. In 1936, he was in charge of performing at the Dramatic Arts Research Council. Although he is an artist, he was also a member of a theater group. His currently confirmed Dramas are 14, including 2 in newspapers, 6 in magazines, and 6 in playbooks. The works in the 『ChosunIlbo』 and 『Jogwang』 were works before liberation, and only works in the playbook were produced after liberation. Jeong hyeon-ung’s dramas illustration can be summarized into roughly three characteristics. First, the stage instructions of the drama text were used as the basis, but even if they were omitted from the instructions, they were excellent in delivering the necessary nuances and messages in the interpretation of the works themselves. Second, elements that are unnecessary for the stage setting and the movement of the characters were made to help the design of the stage arrangement, boldly omitting them even if they were narratively significant. Third, the reader was considered by adjusting the expression of the object or the angle of the stage device according to the atmosphere of the work. In other words, it can be said that Jeong hyeon-ung presented a point of view in the interpretation of the drama by combining his own understanding and interpretation of the work while reproducing sufficiently deeply in the text instructions.
