Abstract

This study explores how disability dance challenges dominant ableist aesthetics and sensory frameworks while generating a new sensory order through Jacques Rancière’s concept of the distribution of the sensible. Through a literature review, it examines the political implications of disability dance. First, it reclaims marginalized bodily movements and sensory experiences as artistic expressions, positioning bodily diversity as a new aesthetic value. Second, it reconfigures spectatorship and dismantles sensory hierarchies through performative audience interaction, subverting traditional notions of balance and harmony that privilege visual aesthetics. Third, the creative process is rooted in collaboration between dancers and choreographers, fostering egalitarian artistic practices and developing new choreographic vocabularies. Fourth, disability dance forms a community of sense by embracing bodily and sensory differences as creative resources, challenging social and cultural hierarchies while expanding the political role of art. This study affirms that disability dance reconstructs sensory aesthetics and explores its potential as an inclusive artistic practice.
