Abstract

This study analyzes the formation of the ‘girl’ subject and the dynamics of gendered discipline in the 1950s South Korean national reconstruction period, focusing on Kim Nae-seong’s renowned children’s novel, The Hill Where the Double Rainbow Rises (1949–1953). In the post-Korean War era, the state’s project of “making nationals” imposed a dual task on girls: they were required to be public ‘Model Citizens’ contributing to state reconstruction, while simultaneously being disciplined as future ‘Wise Mothers and Good Wives’ within the private domestic sphere. This paper argues that these contradictory demands intersected and collided through the discourse of ‘Filial Piety’ (Hyo). By examining the protagonist Seo Eun-ju’s narrative, this study reveals how the virtue of Hyo was not merely a universal moral standard but a gendered imperative that forced girls into extreme forms of emotional labor and self-sacrifice-such as self-harm and the suppression of personal desires-to ensure family survival amidst poverty. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the structural contradictions between the public desire for success (education) and the private duty of caregiving are not resolved through social or institutional changes. Instead, the narrative employs a “patriarchal suture,” resolving the dilemma through the return of a benevolent, economically capable father figure and the melodramatic restoration of the normal family. Consequently, the symbol of the “Double Rainbow” serves as an ideological veil that conceals the violence of the double bind placed on the girl subject. This research re-evaluates 1950s children’s literature as a complex discursive site where state ideology, family ethics, and gender politics dynamically competed and colluded.
