Abstract

In the late 8th century during the reign of Tibetan King Trisong Detsen (Khri srong lde brtsan, 742-c.800), there was a big debate in the Samye (bSam yas) Monastery in Tibet. Kamalaśīla (740-c.795), a Mādhyamikan who advocated the “gradual cultivation theory” of Indian Buddhism and Heshang Moheyan (fl. late 8th c.), who advocated the “sudden enlightenment theory” of Chinese Chan Buddhism, engaged in a debate. Later Tibetans referred to this as the Samye Debate (bSam yas rtsod pa). According to Tibetan historians and thinkers, the debate was won by Kamalaśīla, and Moheyan and his followers admitted defeat and left Tibet. The king then declared the teachings of Indian Buddhism to be the orthodox Dharma, which was based on the teaching of Nāgārjuna (150-c.250). However, a Chinese manuscript unearthed from Dunhuang, titled Dunwu dacheng zhengli jue (頓悟大乘正理決) and compiled by Wang Xi (late 8th c.-early 9th c.), gives a detailed description on some aspects of the debate and says that Heshang Moheyan won the debate. If so, what is the historical truth of the Samye Debate? This study first explores research history related to the Samye Debate, and then introduces content related to the Chan thought of Heshang Moheyan by comparing several texts, including Tibetan manuscripts No. 116 and 823, and Chinese manuscript No. 4646, the latter being the aforementioned Dunwu dacheng zhengli jue, all of which were unearthed by Paul Eugène Pelliot (1878-1945) from Dunhuang. I also examined Kamalaśīla’s Extensive Explanation of the Treatise on Bodhi-mind (Bhāvanākrama). First, the Samye Debate is said to have been debated before the Tibetan king by Kamalaśīla and Moheyan. I suggest the possibility that it may not have been “a historical event” but “a symbolic event” embellished with literary elements. Second, I suggest that there are differences in the understanding of “faxing (法性; dharmatā)” and “faxingli (法性理)” between Indian Buddhism and Chinese Buddhism. In particular, the concept of “faxingli,” which makes a contrast to “faxing,” is a Sinicized concept that takes a perspective of the absolute. Third, for the purpose of attaining “faxingli,” Moheyan’s Chan thought is represented by the phrases “non-discriminative state of non-thought (myi bsam myI rtog pa)” and “no thinking, no contemplation.” Furthermore, Moheyan’s Chan thought is associated with the stance that “individual marks (相; lakṣaṇa)” and “characteristic marks (相; nimitta)” are defined as “ideation (想; saṃjñā)” and “delusional conceptualization (妄想).” I suggest this stance is closely associated with the mixed use of the terms “marks (相)” and “ideations (想),” which originated from the rather free translation style of Kumārajīva (344-413) in his translation of the Diamond Sutra.
